Dua is an important act of worship in Islam. Through supplication, a Muslim turns to Allah, asks for help, expresses gratitude and seeks guidance, forgiveness and goodness. Dua can be made in moments of difficulty as well as in times of happiness and ease.
1. Dua Is an Act of Worship
The Quran encourages believers to call upon Allah. In Surah Ghafir, verse 60, Allah says to call upon Him and promises a response. This verse reminds Muslims of the importance of turning to Allah through sincere supplication.
Reference: Quran 40:60.
2. Speak to Allah with Sincerity
Dua does not require complicated words. A person can ask Allah in their own language and express what is in their heart. The important qualities include sincerity, humility and a genuine desire for what is good.
Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 186, reminds believers that Allah is near and responds to the supplication of the one who calls upon Him.
Reference: Quran 2:186.
3. Make Dua with Patience
Sometimes a person may not see the result they hoped for immediately. Muslims are encouraged to remain patient, continue doing what is right and maintain trust in Allah. A particular dua should never be treated as a guaranteed formula for obtaining a specific worldly outcome.
4. Combine Dua with Good Actions
- Perform obligatory acts of worship sincerely.
- Ask Allah for guidance, forgiveness and goodness.
- Be honest and fair in dealings with others.
- Make responsible efforts towards your goals.
- Respect the rights, dignity and choices of other people.
5. Make Dua in Everyday Life
Supplication can be part of daily life. Ask Allah for beneficial knowledge, good character, family wellbeing, lawful provision, patience and guidance. Remember Allah in both ease and hardship.
A Gentle Reminder
Dua is worship, not a means of controlling another person’s feelings or decisions. Ask Allah for what is good, act ethically and remain patient with the outcome.
