Husband and Wife Guidance in Islam

Islam encourages marriage to be a relationship of tranquillity, affection, mercy and mutual care. A healthy family life grows through good character, communication, patience and shared responsibility.
1. Marriage as a Relationship of Tranquillity
The Quran describes one of the signs of Allah as creating spouses so that people may find tranquillity in one another, and placing affection and mercy between them.
Reference: Quran 30:21.
2. Treat Each Other with Kindness
The Quran instructs believers to live with their spouses in kindness.
Reference: Quran 4:19.
Kindness includes respectful speech, consideration, patience and avoiding humiliation or cruelty.
3. Build Trust and Communication
- Listen carefully and speak respectfully.
- Discuss concerns honestly without insults or threats.
- Respect each other’s dignity, privacy and boundaries.
- Share family responsibilities fairly and thoughtfully.
- Make time for affection, companionship and worship.
4. Handle Disagreements Wisely
Disagreements can happen in family life. Avoid reacting in anger, allow time for calm discussion and seek fair mediation when needed. Where there is abuse, coercion or danger, prioritise safety and seek appropriate support.
5. Make Dua for Family Wellbeing
Surah Al-Furqan, verse 74, teaches believers to ask Allah for spouses and children who bring comfort to their eyes and to become examples for the righteous.
